Rotary Screw vs Piston Compressor Oil | ISO 46 vs ISO 100

Air compressor oil has one job: keep metal apart under heat and load, for a long time, without turning into foam or varnish.

A compressor cooks a small charge of oil. Discharge air is hot. Water gets in from humidity. If the oil breaks down you get varnish and carbon on valves and rotors, foam that starves bearings, rust from trapped water, and rising amps because the machine is dragging. The oil has to hold viscosity, fight oxidation, knock down foam, separate water, and stay compatible with seals. That is true for piston pumps and rotary screws. The grade and base stock still have to match the machine.

Viscosity (what 32, 46, 68, 100 mean)

Those numbers are ISO VG grades — how thick the oil is at 40 °C. They are not brand names and not quality scores.

Read the nameplate or OEM manual. If it says ISO 46, use ISO 46. Do not “upgrade” to 100 in a screw or pour 46 in a piston pump because the bottle says compressor oil.

Piston / Reciprocating Air Compressor Oils

Spec is usually ISO 100 / SAE 30, non-detergent. Two chemistries:

TriboDyn Tri-Guard 1100 — Synthetic Piston Oil
Everyday full synthetic for a piston pump that is already in decent shape. Long drain (up to 8,000 hours in approved service) versus conventional mineral oil that is changed far more often.

TriboDyn Tri-Guard 2100 — Synthetic Diester Piston Oil
Diester is a different synthetic. It is a strong solvent. Use it when the pump ran mineral or a cheap blend and may have varnish, or when discharge temperature is hard on the oil. It helps keep deposits in the oil so they drain instead of plating on valves. Confirm seals on a very old unit before you switch. Costs more; that is the chemistry, not a larger bottle.

 

How to Pick the Right Oil for your Reciprocating Piston Air Compressor

 Clean SAE 30 pump → TriboDyn Tri-Guard 1100.

Heat or varnish or converting off mineral → TriboDyn Tri-Guard 2100 Diester.

Rotary Screw Air Compressor Oils

Spec is usually ISO VG 46. Two chemistries at that same thickness.

Tri-Guard 3046 — Synthetic ISO 46
The working rotary-screw oil for shops that spec ISO 46. Full synthetic, non-detergent, built for varnish resistance, foam control, and up to 8,000-hour drains in approved service. This is the oil most ISO 46 screws should start on.

Tri-Guard 4046 — PAO ISO 46
PAO (polyalphaolefin) is a synthetic base stock. It is more stable in heat and oxidation than a conventional or many “synthetic blend” screw oils, so the drain target is longer — up to 10,000 hours in approved service. Use 4046 when the OEM allows a PAO ISO 46 and you want the longer interval or the machine runs hot and continuous. It is not a different viscosity. It is a more stable fluid at the same ISO 46.

How to Pick the Right Oil for Your Rotary Screw Air Compressor 

Spec ISO 46, standard duty → TriboDyn Tri-Guard 3046.

Spec ISO 46, PAO / longest drain → TriboDyn Tri-Guard 4046.

 Plate says 32 or 68 → do not use 46.

ISO VG is the grade. ISO 9001 is the plant quality system, not an oil spec. Hours assume the compressor OEM’s conditions. These oils are not for breathing-air systems, refrigeration compressors, or PAG / silicone fluids.
